Titanic 100th Anniversary
The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic on April 15, 2012, is being remembered worldwide. This anniversary has also highlighted the need for long term protection of this important site. Numerous events are planned and important legislative initiatives and international efforts are currently working toward protecting the site’s archeological integrity and ensuring that it is treated as a maritime memorial to the 1,500 people who perished when the Titanic sank. The ACUA and our partner organization the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) are working together to support the protection of RMS Titanic. In 2011, a delegation visited Capitol Hill and met with key legislators on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. For more information on that visit, new legislation introduced in April 2012, breaking news and events visit our Titanic 100th Anniversary page.
